Video Tape (VHS, VHS-C, Video8, Hi8, Digital8, miniDV) to DVD or Digital

The cost of converting a video tape depends on the number of tapes being converted. So, for instance, the cost of converting 13 tapes would be 13 x 24 = $312 while the cost of 16 tapes would be 16 x 22 = $352.

Audio Cassette to CD or Digital

If your audio cassettes contain music, you have the option of having just one file for each side of the tape, or I can make each song its own file like on a CD.

Number of tapes Price per tape (1 file per side) Price per tape (1 file per song)
1-5 $16 $28
6-15 $14 $24
16-30 $13 $22
31-50 $12 $20
51+ $10 $18

Slide & negative conversion

The cost to convert slides & negatives is $0.75 per image plus an additional $12. However, if you also have other items to convert such as video tapes, DVDs or cassettes, then the $12 fee will not apply.

Tape Repair

Do NOT throw away your snapped tapes. I can repair each of your snapped tapes for just $20.

Additional Editing

Got any footage that appears on multiple tapes? Got footage that begins on one tape and continues on another? Want to consolidate your footage? Not to worry! I cannot say what the cost will be but if you want me to do any additional editing, let me know and I will charge you based on the amount of work required. Keep in mind that depending on what you ask of me, the cost could be anywhere from around 20% to 100% of the cost of the initial conversion.

Storage options

After converting your items, you have the option of them being put onto a DVD (for video), CD (for audio), USB flash drive, external hard drive or cloud service. The cost of each is listed below. Keep in mind that 1 hour of video is about 5GB while a 90 minute audio cassette is about 1GB. So, for instance, 20 video tapes that are an hour long each would require a 128GB USB.

USB 16GB $8
USB 32GB $12
USB 64GB $16

Cloud FREE

*Each video tape will be on one DVD or one CD, except those over 90 minutes and 80 minutes respectively which will be split across two or more discs as required.

**For cloud storage, the options are Google Drive, Dropbox or OneDrive. The latter two options will be most suitable if you have a paid account with either service.

Delivery Options

Your items can be either posted, delivered in person or picked up. If you post or deliver them to me, there is no additional cost on my end. However, if you want me to pick up the items and/or drop them off once I am finished, it is an additional cost depending on the distance from Epping. However, this additional cost does not apply for orders over $500 (about 23 video tapes or 42 audio tapes).

Distance from Epping Pickup/Drop Off Cost
0-5km $10
5-15km $20
15-30km $30
30-50 $40
>50km negotiable*

*If you happen to live more than 50km away from Epping, but don’t want to post them to me, let me know as we may be able to find a designated meeting place in the middle.

Once the tapes have been converted, if you require me to post the items (along with the storage items) back to you, the cost will be the same as it would be for you to post the items to me.

Not sure what’s on your tapes and if they’re worth converting?

I have received a couple of enquiries from people who are not sure what is on some of their tapes and has no way of checking. If this is your situation and you’re not sure if your tapes are worth converting, send them to me and I will transfer the first minute of each tape and send you the raw file for you to look at. For any tapes you decide not to convert, you will only be charged $5. And if you do decide to go ahead with converting the rest of the tape, you will be charged the normal amount.

Other Considerations

  • File Formats: By default, videos are exported in MP4 (H.264), audio files are exported in WAV and image files are in JPEG. However, you can request me to export in other formats such as MOV/AVI for video, AAC or MP3 for audio or PNG for image files. However, this may affect storage requirements.

  • Enhancements: By default, I do not carry out enhancements such as noise reduction, sharpening or other effects as these can create unpleasant artifacts. The only exception is deinterlacing which is carried out on all videos taken from an interlaced source. However, if you would like me to do any enhancements, I can negotiate a price for that. I can also offer a before and after comparison so you can decide if the enhancement is worth it.

  • Turnaround time: I can usually transfer around 5 tapes per business day on average and around 100 slides/negatives. So if you have, say, 25 tapes, you can expect a turnaround time of about a week. However, this will vary depending on the amount of customers I have at any given time. I will let you know if I anticipate a longer turnaround time.
